 The latitude and longitude lines comprise an imaginary grid that has been placed over the globe;

• Lines that cross the grid (flat lines) are latitude lines. The Equator is an example of a latitude line. The Equator is the latitude line that divides the Earth into two hemispheres (since it is the point in latitude: the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere. Northern latitude lines of the Equator are referred to as north latitude; and southern latitude lines of the Equator are referred to as south latitude;

• Each degree of latitude or longitude contains 60 minutes, and each minute of latitude contains 60 seconds;

• The lines that run up and down the grid (the high lines) are longitude lines. The longitude lines

are also called meridians. The Prime Meridian, which passes through Greenwich, England, is the longitude line that divides the Earth into two hemispheres (since it is point 0 longitude): the eastern hemisphere and the western hemisphere. East longitude lines of the First Meridian are referred to as eastern longitude; longitude lines west of the Prime Meridian are referred to as West Longitude.
